De Nationale Postcode Loterij is de laatste tijd voornamelijk negatief in het nieuws gekomen. Zo ontstond er onder meer ophef over de ‘herinneringsbrief’. Dit was gewoon reclame, maar had meer weg van een aanmaning. De loterij doet echter ook heel veel goede dingen. Zo schonk de Postcode Loterij onlangs een bedrag van €2.409.000 aan Greenpeace.
Nieuw project
Met deze financiële bijdrage van de Postcode Loterij start het goede doel een nieuw project om de bossen in Rusland te beschermen. In dit land brandt jaarlijks namelijk 40 miljoen hectare aan natuur af. Dit gebied is twee keer zo groot als Nederland.
Veel brandweerteams werken vrijwillig, waardoor zij dit niet allemaal kunnen blussen. Zeer jammer natuurlijk. Met de donatie van de Loterij krijgen vrijwillige brandweerteams meer mogelijkheden en middelen. Op deze manier hopen de Postcode Loterij en Greenpeace het aantal natuurbranden te verminderen.
Boswet
In Rusland ging zo’n tien jaar geleden de Boswet van kracht. Met deze wet zette Rusland een streep door het effectief bestrijden van natuurbranden. In feite houdt dit dus niets anders in dat de branden vanzelf moeten doven. Dit houdt in dat er onnodig veel hectare bos verbrand.
Daarnaast komen er natuurlijk veel bewoners van deze gebieden in gevaar. Ook voor dieren kunnen deze branden grote gevolgen hebben. Met dit nieuwe project wil Greenpeace dan ook voorkomen dat het leefgebied van bruine beren, de gouden adelaar en de Siberische tijger verder verdwijnt.
Mobiele blusapparaten
Met de komst van deze Boswet besloot Greenpeace tot actie over te gaan. Het goede doel ging zelf aan de slag om de bosbranden te blussen. Dit wordt gedaan met behulp van vele mannelijke en vrouwelijke vrijwilligers. Zij trekken met mobiele blusapparaten naar de brandhaarden om deze te blussen. Op deze manier hoopt Greenpeace zoveel mogelijk natuurgebieden te redden.
Blussen alleen niet voldoende
Ondanks de inzet van vele vrijwilligers, is het blussen van de branden alleen niet voldoende. Doordat de aarde steeds verder opwarmt, vliegt er steeds meer natuurgebied in Rusland in brand. Om het aantal bosbranden te verminderen, is brandpreventie noodzakelijk. Met het nieuwe project besteedt Greenpeace dan ook vooral aandacht aan brandpreventie.
Met de bijdrage van de Postcode Loterij worden er twaalf coördinatiecentra opgezet. Daarnaast traint en ondersteunt Greenpeace twaalf groepen vrijwillige bosbrandspecialisten. Zij zijn allen verantwoordelijk voor hun eigen regio. Vanuit de coördinatiecentra worden nieuwe vrijwilligers gemobiliseerd. Deze nieuwe vrijwilligers werken lokaal aan preventie en het bestrijden van bosbranden.
Tot slot wordt drooggelegd veen door zes vrijwilligersgroepen weer onder water gezet. Dit gebeurt met name in brandgevoelige plaatsen waar veel mensen wonen. Op deze manier moet de kans op een natuurbrand kleiner worden.
Bijdragen aan veiligheid
“Klimaatverandering is voor veel mensen een onzichtbaar en ontastbaar fenomeen. Maar bosbranden zijn uiterst zichtbaar en bedreigen dagelijks het milieu en de levens van mensen in Rusland”, zegt Anne Schoemakers, directeur van Greenpeace Nederland.
“Door branden te voorkomen en met zoveel mogelijk vrijwilligers te blussen, leveren we een grote bijdrage aan de veiligheid van mensen en het oplossen van het klimaatprobleem. Het is fantastisch dat de Nationale Postcode Loterij ons hierin steunt met deze zeer gulle gift. Deelnemers van de Nationale Postcode Loterij, heel hartelijk dank!”.
