Een stukje Duitse traditie: zaterdagavond met een Lotto-briefje in de hand voor de televisie zitten, kijken welke nummertjes worden getrokken en te weten komen of je miljonair bent geworden, een kleine prijs te pakken hebt of mag hopen dat je de volgende keer meer geluk hebt. De Duitse Lotto was net zo’n cultuurgoed als de bierfeesten, met voetbal scoren in de laatste minuut en de vette, Duitse braadworst.
De succesjaren van de Duitse Lotto
In 1948 werd de Duitse Lotto opgericht. Duitsland stond toen nog onder controle van de geallieerden die Duitsland controleerden nadat Adolf Hitler en zijn leger waren verslagen. In elke winkelstraat zijn de lelijke uithangborden van de Duitse Lotto wel te zien. Deze uithangborden geven aan waar Duitsers hun loten voor de Duitse Lotto kunnen kopen. Meestal is dit in kranten- en sigarettenwinkeltjes. Miljoenen Duitsers doen elke week mee aan de Lotto en volgen de uitslag via de live televisie-uitzending.
Het verval van de Duitse Lotto
Je voelt ‘m al aankomen. De ‘maar’. Hier is de ; maar’ dan. In 2009 kocht nog 40% van de Duitsers een lot voor de Lotto. In 2015 deed nog slechts 22,7 procent van de Duitsers mee aan de voormalige nationale trots. Een van de oorzaken is de sterke opkomst van wedkantoren en gokhallen in Duitsland. In grote Duitse steden is op bijna elke hoek van de straat wel een wedkantoor en ook om een gokhal te vinden hoef je niet heel goed te zoeken. En, als dat allemaal teveel gevraagd is, kun je ook nog altijd je computer aanzetten en inloggen bij een online casino of een online bookmaker. Het grote voordeel van (online) gokken: je hoeft niet te wachten tot de televisie-uitzending van zaterdag om te weten of je prijs hebt. Bij online gokken weet je dat namelijk direct nadat je aan de gokkast hebt gedraaid of nadat het roulette-balletje in een van de vakjes van het roulettewiel is gevallen.
De successen waren ook te danken aan het monopolie dat de Duitse Lotto had. Vergelijkbaar met in Nederland bijvoorbeeld de Staatsloterij en Holland Casino. Een monopolist heeft vrijwel de hele markt in handen. Op het moment dat er concurrentie komt, verdwijnen doorgaans een groot deel van de klanten richting de concurrenten.In Duitsland had de Lotto tot 2008 een monopolie. Daarna privatiseerde Duitsland onder druk van de Europese Unie de loterijmarkt. In de sigarettenzaakjes worden Duitsers die zich voor hebben genomen om miljonair te worden met de Duitse Lotto met de neus op de feiten gedrukt: met dikke en grote letters wordt erin gepeperd dat de kans om te weinig kleiner is dan 1 op 1.000.000. Veel Duitsers haken hierdoor gedemotiveerd af en kiezen liever voor alternatieven met grotere win kansen.
