In 2002 liep de heer Arends uit het Groningse Ter Apel een prijs van € 700.000 mis. In november 2002 viel de Domino-prijs van 5,1 miljoen euro in het postcodegebied 9561 BJ in Ter Apel waar Tonny Arends woonachtig was.
Kassa en groot feest aan de Sperwerhof in Ter Apel! Helaas. Arends bleek niet mee te doen. Hij stond in het rood op zijn bankrekening en het geld voor zijn lot kon niet meer geïncasseerd worden. De voorwaarden van de Nationale Postcodeloterij schrijven voor dat wie niet betaalt, van de deelnemerslijst wordt geschrapt. Je doet dan dus niet mee en wie niet meedoet, kan ook niet winnen.
Postcode Loterij en Rabobank schuldig
De advocaat van de familie Arends, ene Orlando Mo-Ajok, gespecialiseerd in het verdedigen van onder andere SMS-bedrijven die wanhopige mannen geld proberen af te troggelen met SMS-jes die zijn verstuurd door zich als gewillige vrouw voordoende studenten, schoot ’n tweetrapsraket af. Hij gaf natuurlijk de Nationale Postcode Loterij de schuld. In zo’n geval vindt men altijd dat de Postcode Loterij meer brieven had moeten sturen en vaker had moeten proberen te incasseren.
Hij gaf echter ook de Rabobank de schuld. In tegenstelling tot de loterijloser uit Weert had de Groninger Arends zijn maximale kredietruimte namelijk nog niet overschreven. Hij stond in het rood, maar met de Rabobank was afgesproken dat hij nog verder in het rood mocht staan. De Rabobank had de door de Nationale Postcode Loterij aangeboden incasso voor het betalen van twee loten en de Jackpot-verdubbelaar dus gewoon af moeten halen van de rekening van Arends.
Rabobank bekent schuld
Over wat er precies met de Rabobank is afgesproken doen zowel de Rabobank, Tonny Arends als Mo-Ajok nogal schimmig. Vermoedelijk is dat onderdeel van de afspraak. De Rabobank zit er natuurlijk niet op te wachten dat elke loterijloser zich straks beroept op ’n briefje waarin de Rabobank schuld erkent voor het niet incasseren van loterijgelden. Het heeft er alle schijn van dat de Rabobank wel ’n deel van de prijs van Tonny Arends heeft vergoed. Daarmee is Tonny Arends dus deels loterijloser af.
